FAQs about Vision Restoration Therapy – Help for Stroke and Head Injury Patients

NovaVision™, Inc. developed Vision Restoration Therapy to help stroke and head injury patients regain their vision, mobility, confidence, and quality of life. Learn the answers to frequently asked questions about the basics of vision rehabilitation, including how long the therapy takes, how it works, and more.

What is Vision Restoration Therapy?

Vision Restoration Therapy is intended for the diagnosis and improvement of visual function in patients with impaired vision resulting from trauma, stroke, inflammation, surgical removal of brain tumors, or brain surgery. Vision Restoration Therapy can treat the following conditions in stroke or head injury patients: hemianopia, quadrantanopia, scotoma (blind spots), diffuse field defects / low vision, and others.

Is Vision Restoration Therapy covered by insurance?

At this time, patients are responsible for the home therapy cost of VRT. If you have Medicare, a portion of your visits to the VRT Center may be covered. If you have other insurance, you should check with your insurance company about whether these physician visits are covered. If not, you will be responsible for the cost.

Centers that administer Vision Restoration Therapy may offer financing options through a third-party financial institution to provide an alternative payment method that you can use to cover the costs of VRT.

How long does Vision Restoration Therapy take to complete?

VRT typically lasts for approximately six to seven months. You will perform one hour of daily therapy six days a week, prescribed in time intervals based on your needs and abilities. Results are evaluated and therapy updates are made monthly. At the end of the six to seven months, your physician will determine if additional therapy would be beneficial. Read more about the treatment and its results.

Does Vision Restoration Therapy have any side effects?

The majority of patients who undergo Vision Restoration Therapy do not experience any significant side effects, though some patients have reported infrequent headaches. If you experience discomfort or strain, you should consult your VRT Center or attending physician.
